School Staff Instructor - vacancy in London

Adult Volunteer 3

A school in London is now recruiting for a School Staff Instructor, to support their CCF contingent.

This is an exciting new role at Westminster Academy, combining two distinct, but interconnected, roles:

School Staff Instructor (3 days a week)

Working with the contingent commander (a senior member of staff), you will be responsible for launching the school’s Combined Cadet Force, which will parade for the first time in September 2018 with an RAF detachment.

Coming from a military background, you will be responsible for managing the kit stores and armoury, advising the contingent commander on how to develop the cadet force, training both officers and cadets, and completing all returns to the relevant authorities. As the school’s first SSI, you will also have the unique opportunity to be involved in the initial process of setting up the cadet force. This role is expected to take up an average of three days per week (more in the first few weeks),

Outdoors Education Coordinator (2 days a week)

Westminster Academy is a leader in Outdoors Education. They run a thriving DofE programme at Bronze, Silver and Gold, and this year, their Year 7, 8 and 12 cohorts are all completing residential programmes, and students are going on expeditions to the Canadian Yukon, the Amazon and the Himalayas this summer. Working with organisations like Outward Bound, the Jubilee Sailing Trust, and British Exploring Society, you will be responsible for organising training sessions and expeditions for the students. This role will involve managing a number of school staff who volunteer as DofE group leaders, maintaining expedition kit stores, and planning and risk assessing a variety of expeditions.

The ideal candidate should be enthusiastic and hard-working. Training will be provided for both roles, though experience with cadet forces and/or holding outdoor education qualifications will be an advantage.

They should have a passion that inspires the students, and a meticulous approach to managing risks and logistics. Flexibility is a must, as the role will involve spending time on expeditions/camps (with days off in lieu of this). They must believe in the importance of developing students’ character and resilience.
