After a long gap due to Covid-19 restrictions, two of the CCF First Sea Lord Cadets along with several cadets from other Navy Cadet Forces, got together for a visit to witness the FOST Thursday War, where they would experience drills and exercises on board a Royal Navy ship.

The day started with an early wake-up call to catch the 0600 Torpoint Ferry across from accommodation in HMS Raleigh. Once through the Main Gate, the Cadets were received at FOST, and given lifejackets and off they went for a trip to HMS Portland. Following a recent refit, the Type-23 is undergoing training and very much looking forward to the delivery of front-line operations.

Once safely on board the hosts ensured the Cadets were offered a welcome bacon or sausage sandwich followed by a tour of the ship.

Once the practice Thursday War got underway, the Cadets visited various areas of the ship including the Bridge, Ops Room and Flight Deck, all the while trying to keep clear of the ship's company, plus an additional 45 specialist training personnel, putting the ships company through their paces!

As the training scenario unfolded, involving practice fires, floods and missile strikes, the Cadets took up post beside the Incident Board and watched as everyone raced to Action Stations. Unfortunately, the weather played its part in the day, with high winds and driving rain making for uncomfortable sailing conditions but overall, the day was thoroughly enjoyed by all involved with all Cadets wearing broad smiles as they reached land.
