The City of Derby Academy CCF Army section recently took part in a CIS weekend, where cadets developed vital communication skills, learning how to operate equipment effectively and applied their knowledge in both practical and classroom-based settings. Captain Rich Timmins, Contingent Commander, The City of Derby Academy CCF, provides us with an update on what happened during their training.
“Cadets trained to operate key communication systems, gaining qualifications on the 710 and 715 radio and learning to deploy the 4.5 metre mast to help extend communication capability in the field. Cadets also gained experience using the Battle Code (BATCO) encryption system, enabling them to send and receive messages securely. This is an essential skill in both military and modern communication environments. The cadet’s enthusiasm, discipline and commitment in mastering these tasks and technical skills were evident throughout.
In addition, I’m delighted to share that 14 cadets have successfully completed the CyberFirst Adventurers Award. This nationally recognised programme, supported by the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), introduces young people to the fundamentals of cyber security, digital safety, and modern problem‑solving in a technology‑driven world. By completing this programme, cadets are not only gaining valuable insights into the digital world but also developing vital technological skills that are incredibly important for their future education and careers. The CyberFirst Adventurers Award plays a crucial role in helping cadets learn about and understand online threats, secure digital practices and allows them to learn how to foster critical thinking in a rapidly evolving digital landscape. Transferrable skills like this help support cadets in becoming informed, capable and responsible digital citizens.
