Taking place at Strathearn School, the event saw senior female cadets from Strathearn School and senior male cadets from Campbell College work together to pull the 4x4 around 300 metres.

The Land Rover Pull was supported by the Army Engagement Team in Northern Ireland, as well as 2 Royal Irish, which is particularly meaningful to the CCF unit, as the cadets proudly wear the Royal Irish cap badge. 2 Royal Irish were also on hand after the Land Rover event and delivered a poignant presentation, offering valuable insights into the regiment’s history and traditions, helping to highlight the connection between the cap badge and the cadets.

The event was well attended by the CCF unit as well as the wider school community who all turned out in force to cheer the cadets on. Lt Turner, Cadet Force Adult Volunteer (CFAV), Strathearn School comments, “as well as raising vital funds for SSAFA, the event highlighted just some of the values of the cadets – showing how working together can help to achieve a main goal, as well as encouraging camaraderie and involving the local community.”

Bringing the School Community Together

Speaking before the event, Cdt Sgt Mooney, Cdt CSgt Archer and Cdt Sgt Leech noted the importance of raising money for charity, as well as the fun competitiveness and team spirit it brings to the unit:

Q: “Tell us, what are you doing here today?”

Cdt Sgt Mooney: “Today, we are doing a Land Rover Pull in Strathearn School’s back car park. We've got multiple cadets from both Campbell College and Strathearn School taking part, as we are a Combined Cadet Contingent. We’re pulling the Land Rover up and down the car park about three times, and with different teams contributing each time.”

Q: “Why did you choose SSAFA as the charity you want to support?”

Cdt CSgt Archer: “The SSAFA is an armed forces charity, and I think it is very important to support these charities as they help military families and those who are currently deployed. The charity helps veterans with mental health, for example if they need support after being deployed. Overall, I think it is a really good charity and a really great cause.”

Q: “How have you raised money for SSAFA?”

Cdt Sgt Leech: “For SSAFA we created a JustGiving page that has currently raised over £600. Our target was £500, but we were really just hoping for as much money as people were able to give. We shared our JustGiving page on social media and through both schools to try and promote our event. We are really grateful to fundraise for SSAFA.”

And this isn’t the first time this CCF unit has raised money for charity, having previously worked with SSAFA before when volunteering at the Somme Nursing Home.

Being a cadet within the CCF can be a life changing experience, and as well as being able to take part in a huge range of exciting and adventurous activities, the Land Rover Pull also demonstrates the importance of charity work for a cadet and how it can provide a sense of purpose and community, whilst also being fun and working together in a team.

Congratulations to all of those who took part, particularly our cadets! Your amazing efforts and teamwork helped to raise over £600 so far for SSAFA – well done!
