Southmoor Academy is a very successful and rapidly expanding 11-18 school. Our Combined Cadet Force was approved by the Ministry of Defense in 2019, but has been suspended during the pandemic. We are now looking for a committed member of staff to act as School Staff instructor (approx. 1 day per week) and to support the pastoral team in managing a large and diverse cohort of students at Key Stages 3 & 4 during the rest of their working week.

The pastoral element of the post involves working with year leaders, behaviour and lunch time support staff, including liaison with the attendance team, to ensure positive outcomes for pupils in terms of their welfare and personal development, maintaining high standards of attendance, behaviour and attitudes to learning. The position would be suited to someone with proven experience of the armed or uniformed services and of working with young people in a pastoral capacity.

The SSI element of the role will involve developing and delivering sessions such as foot drills, navigation, physical activity, first aid, field craft etc, to students while making links to their core curriculum. The role will initially be for one year due to funding, however if successful, we are committed to embedding the CCF and this role as part of our core school provision.

If you are the person we are looking for, you will have a services background combined with excellent interpersonal skills, both in terms of challenging students to ensure their behavior and conduct is of the highest standard both at school and in the community, and to motivate and inspire our young people to achieve the best they can.

You will have excellent organisational skills, to co-ordinate with the MoD to make full use of available resources to benefit students, and ensure that associated administrative duties including risk assessments, health and safety are completed in line with school and MoD requirements. Furthermore, you will be able to commit to a minimum of 10 days during school holiday periods and at least three weekends per year to attend training and run and accompany students on activities and events.

In return we offer fantastic support from both the MoD and in school working alongside an exciting and dynamic team committed to creating an inclusive and aspirational school.
