Cadets from Robert Gordon CCF, Erskine Stewarts Melville School CCF and Felsted CCF recently attended the Senior Cadet Instructor Course (SCIC) in Barry Buddon to take part in demo lessons in subjects such as fieldcraft, drill and navigation.

The SCIC course is designed to teach the cadets how to instruct and lead other cadets at Basic, 1 Star and 2 Star levels; aiming to build on the experience and knowledge gained after completing their Junior Cadet Instructor Cadre (JCIC). As well as this, the course offers cadets the opportunity to gain an SQA Level 6 Module in Delivering Training to Groups.

The cadets were also tasked with planning and conducting theoretical and practical lessons where they welcomed feedback from their peers to help with their development. Excitingly, the cadets were also able to spend a night out in the field where they were able to work on their Section Battle drills and skills.

This course is a firm favourite with CCF cadets as it enables the cadets to develop their teaching and leadership techniques as well as the course contributing towards completion of their 4 Star Level too.

Upskilling and Training Lessons

And it’s not just the cadets who were at Barry Buddon to experience new things. Several of our Cadet Force Adult Volunteers (CFAVs) attended the Basic Instructor Assessment (BIA) course. The BIA aims to provide a series of upskilling and training lessons, as well as various assessment which is part of the CFAV induction process to ensure that all volunteers are competent in delivering the Army Cadet Syllabus.

Whilst here, the CFAVs also had the opportunity to gain an SQA accredited Level 6 qualification in Planning and Delivering Training to groups. This section is assessed as part of the CFIT module during the course.

The course focuses on four core subjects – Drill and Turnout, Navigation, Cadet Force Instructional Techniques (CFIT) and Fieldcraft and assessments are carried out on each of these subjects. To attend this course, CFAVs are required to have completed prior training in all four areas of the syllabus.
