The Princess Royal has visited Rossall School to inspect its Combined Cadet Force – the oldest continuously existing school cadet corps in the United Kingdom.

Her Royal Highness presented cadets with their contingent banner, an official ceremonial flag, after inspecting the parade.

Rossall, in Fleetwood, Lancashire, was the first school in the country to establish a cadet unit (CCF), establishing the corps in February 1860.

Andrew McBride, Head Master at Rossall, said: “It was a huge honour to welcome Her Royal Highness to Rossall and to have her inspect our Combined Cadet Force.

“Rossall has the longest established school cadet force in the country, and it's something we as a school are very proud of.

“For more than 165 years, the CCF has provided generations of Rossallians with opportunities to develop leadership, discipline, teamwork and confidence.

“It was a privilege to share this important part of the school’s history and tradition with her.”

After presenting cadets with its banner and inspecting the honour guard, Her Royal Highness received a Royal Salute before meeting guests in the assembly hall and unveiling a commemorative plaque.

Captain Dave Lindsay, School Staff Instructor CCF, said: “Having The Princess Royal present the contingent with its banner was a particularly special moment for our cadets, and one which I am sure they will remember for many years to come.

“We are extremely grateful to Her Royal Highness for taking the time to visit Rossall, meet our cadets and tour the school.”

Rossall’s CCF is split into three sections – the Army, RAF and Royal Navy – and is open for all students to join from Year 9 upwards.

A spokesperson for the Combined Cadet Force said: “As we approach the first National Cadets Week, this visit was an opportunity to celebrate one of the country’s great youth success stories and to recognise the lasting impact the Combined Cadet Force has had on generations of young people.

"Rossall School’s commitment to cadets reflects the important role that schools play in helping young people develop confidence, resilience, teamwork and leadership through challenge, service and shared endeavour.

“It is an honour to welcome Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal and showcase the value of the cadet experience. Her visit is a powerful recognition of the commitment of cadets, volunteers and educators across the UK who help young people realise their potential.”
