Recognising the Commitment of CCF Volunteers

Earlier this summer, the Combined Cadet Force Association (CCFA) invited nominations to recognise the extraordinary efforts of Combined Cadet Force (CCF) adult volunteers. The reward? A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity: four tickets to the glamorous red-carpet Premiere of the final Downton Abbey film at Leicester Square on 3 September.

From a pool of inspiring nominations, four names were drawn—Lynn Ansell from Headington School CCF, Annette Oliver from Read School CCF, Robyn Kirwan from Reddam House Berkshire CCF and Sharon Chamberlain Keen from Rydal Penrhos CCF—who each had the chance to step into the glitz and magic of the big screen world for one unforgettable evening.

A Personal View of the Experience

The moment we stepped onto the velvet-lined walkway, the air buzzed with anticipation—mixed with a little rain. Reporters and flashing cameras lined the entrance, capturing every arrival. Above us, the cinema billboard glowed with the film’s title, bold and unapologetic, daring us to expect something unforgettable.

The Atmosphere Inside

Inside, the energy was electric. Celebrities mingled effortlessly with production teams, while influencers and guests dazzled in stylish attire. Finding our seats, we felt that sacred hush descend—the kind that happens just before the first frame lights up the screen and the world narrows to a single point of light.

A Touching Tribute

Before the film began, the producers took to the stage. Their pride was unmistakable, though tinged with a touch of sadness as they spoke warmly about Dame Maggie Smith—a reminder of the legacy behind the story we were about to witness.

The Film Experience

The film itself was a rollercoaster: laughter, gasps, and even a few tears rippled through the audience. But what struck us most wasn’t just the story—it was the collective experience. Strangers leaned forward in unison, reacted together, and shared in every emotion. It was a powerful reminder that cinema isn’t just entertainment; it’s communion.

An Evening at Brasserie Zédel

After the premiere, we strolled to Brasserie Zédel, thankfully under drier skies than our arrival. The art deco venue perfectly echoed the elegance of Downton Abbey’s era, making it an inspired choice for the after-party. Champagne flowed, laughter continued, and the magic of the evening lingered as we reflected on how lucky we were to have been nominated through the competition.

As we made our way home, the experience felt almost surreal—an unforgettable night where lights, laughter, and cinematic magic converged.

This not only celebrates the premiere experience, but also shines a spotlight on the invaluable work of CCF adult volunteers everywhere—the dedication, service, and community spirit that make evenings like this possible.
