Over the last half term, the cadets have taken part in hours of theoretical and practical training across a variety of first aid topics including everything from dealing with minor bleeding to bites and stings and low blood sugar to burns and scolds, naming just a few.

The training was run by the contingent’s training officer Capt Lee Tester, to enable the cadets to gain the St John Ambulance’s Young Lifesaver Award and gain ‘Youth First Aider Status’.

Last week, cadets who had taken part in the weeks of training put their skills to the test with their final assessment.

The overall pass rate was 98% at the contingent, allowing 19 cadets to now wear the St John Ambulance YFA badge and show off their new skill and achievement; a skill which can be used towards the Duke of Edinburgh Award.

Capt Tester said: “This is a great stepping stone for our cadets to now move on to more advanced first aid qualifications and to look into testing their skills at the National First Aid Competition.

“We have 19 cadets qualified as Youth First Aiders and will now be ready to assist in a first aid incident at a moments notice. Well done to all who passed.”
