Innovation is paramount for the CCF RAF, who are using advanced technologies such as flight simulators and VR sets to transform how their cadets are engaging with aviation and aerospace.

Using a mixture of interactive exhibits and hands-on activities, cadets can develop their skills and knowledge through real-world, cutting-edge experiences.

Rebuilding the Experience with Lego

The introduction of robotics and coding has deepened the CCF RAF's dedication to STEM education by using programming such as Sphero Bolt, as well as more readily known building tools such as Lego; where the Lego Prime Robotics kits offer hands-on experiences that help nurture cadet’s creativity and problem-solving skills; fostering critical thinking, teamwork and encouraging innovation.

eSports on the Xbox

Furthering their commitment to enhancing cadets’ use of technology, eSports Zones use Xbox game consoles to offer cadets a window into the vibrant world of competitive gaming. Using high performance setups, cadets can hone their skills in teamwork, communication and tactical thinking. These are all attributes that are increasingly valuable in today’s high-tech aerospace sector, as well as being exceptional transferable soft skills for future employment in any field.

Flight Simulation: Where Dreams Take Flight

Flight simulation is at the heart of the CCF RAF innovation approach. This is where cadets can practice flying on state-of-the-art flight simulators that are meticulously designed to give aspiring pilots a truly immersive and authentic experience.

Equipped with realistic controls, high-resolution visuals and accurate flight dynamics, cadets can experience the excitement of piloting a variety of aircrafts but in a safe, controlled environment.

Whether mastering basic manoeuvres or facing complex emergency scenarios, these simulators enable cadets to build confidence and develop essential piloting skills.

The Mosslands School CCF (RAF) is just one of the schools benefitting from the use of the RAF’s technology. We spoke to Cdt Sgt A Mountford and LCpl Z Hughes, who discussed how the flight simulators and use of Xboxes have helped enhance their knowledge and learning:

Sgt A Mountford: “The flight simulators have benefitted me in many ways. Using them has supported me in my learning and understanding of the flight instruments and manoeuvres in an aircraft – such as the elevator, pitch and roll. Not only have they supported me, but it has also benefitted the rest of our unit by expanding our knowledge.”

LCpl Z Hughes continues: “We use the flight simulators on Xbox to better understand how aircrafts work. It also gives us the chance to do our part task training, and this allows us the opportunity to earn more badges for our uniforms! The Xbox flight simulators have benefitted our school by allowing the entire student body to see what we, as cadets, do. The Xbox flight simulators have helped cadets gain new knowledge and they've also helped me to improve my confidence and leadership skills as I have taught other students how to use them!”
