Skills, Precision and Lessons in Aviation

The Defence College of Air and Space Operations landed next to the Walker Riverside Academy grounds in an Airbus Eurocopter. Joined by pilots Captain Telford and WO2 Lucke, the day saw 70 cadets split into two interactive groups who were shown around the aircraft.

Lessons from the Classroom and The Skies

Captain Telford AAC has strong North-East connections, having previously spent time with Northumbria UOTC. Captain Telford gave the cadets a detailed account about his life growing up, his achievements so far and what life is like as a military aviator. He also spoke about what the future holds and how he has dealt with challenges along the way.

WO2 Lucke is a long-serving and highly experienced pilot and the cadets were lucky enough to be able to ask him questions about the aircraft as well as talk to him about his military career, how he came to be a pilot and the benefits and rewards that come from such an important role. The session sparked a real enthusiasm amongst the cadets who got to hear firsthand about the skills and precision required by a military aviator.

Inspiration for the Future

The event was organised by Captain Andy Austin (CCF Contingent Commander) and SSI Mike Sykes, with the purpose of the visit being to inspire and motivate cadets about possible military career opportunities. The visit also aimed to teach the cadets about how surrounding yourself with good people and equipping yourself with great life and practical skills can help when faced with challenges in the future. It was an inspiring and educational visit from two incredible pilots!
